Week One

Hi 10K'ers! Rhea (a.k.a. "Bex") here. I coach the "gazelles," as Coach Peter generously called my group. However, instead of the so-called "fast" group, I'm re-naming my group "Intermediate II."

That moniker is more inclusive and better describes our pace.

I had the pleasure of running with Amanda, Anne, and Jeff this past Saturday. We ran 3.6 miles on our first training run, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, past the Washington Monument, to the Capitol and back. It was a clear, sunny and freezing morning, but we warmed up quickly.

Jeff ended up taking a slightly shorter route, running about 3.3 miles. I chatted with Anne and Amanda on the way back, where we battled a headwind.

Running this week: Please run 2-3 times this week, 30-40 minutes if possible. Once our groups shake out, I will give you more specific advice. Also, Coach Peter mentioned the possibility of starting Tuesday morning workouts.

In the interim, try out the DC Road Runners' Wednesday night track workouts at Washington & Lee High School in Arlington. See the club website, www.dcroadrunners.org (click on "Track Workouts"), for more details.

Sounds like a nice run. Passing by the drained reflecting pools (of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a dream" fame) that stretch out between the Lincoln Memorial and the WWII Memorial must have made the run memorable. I haven't seen those pools drained since 2003. I remember it then because that was the weekend the U.S. invaded Iraq. Running in DC is a joy because it's so full of history (your run took you near our White House, torched in 1814 by the invading British, and past the Capitol which the British couldn't burn down because the structure wouldn't ignite) and memorials (did you see, tucked away in the bushes to the south, the WWI Memorial to all DC residents who were "Over There?"). This coming week Coach Bob will be here--he was off placing 31st and running a 1:57:41 (7:34 pace) in the club's Belle Haven 25K (15.5 miles) Race on Saturday. Between Rhea and Bob, fasten your seat belts!
